CCDS Information

The Canadian Centre on Disability Studies (CCDS) is a consumer-directed, university-affiliated centre dedicated to research, education and the dissemination of knowledge on disability issues. Through its activities, CCDS promotes the full and equal participation of people with a variety of disabilities in all aspects of society, on a local, national and international level. CCDS’ greatest strengths lie in building equal partnerships and acting as a bridge between the disability community and the government, corporate and academic sectors.  Because CCDS responds to the needs of people with various disabilities at the grassroots level, its activities are both broad-based and focused.  As a result, CCDS’ work not only provides the impetus for social change, but also leads to further collaboration and activities among some of its key partners.

Since its incorporation in 1995, CCDS has been successful in creating strong, viable partnerships with more than 174 individuals, groups, organizations, funders, universities and governments around the globe. Some of these partnerships have crossed traditional boundaries, making them unique and innovative.

CCDS is now strategically moving forward to carry out universal design research, development and training. It has brought together leading experts in universal design as part of the CCDS team. These experts have been involved with CCDS on prior training projects. At the moment very few organizations in Canada are carrying out universal design research.
